Should I get an oncology second opinion abroad?▾
Yes, second opinions change the treatment plan in 15–30% of cancer cases according to published studies. Getting a second opinion from an independent multidisciplinary team costs €500–1,500 and can be arranged remotely by sending your pathology slides and imaging.
Can I receive chemotherapy abroad and continue in the UK?▾
Yes. Many patients begin a treatment programme in Turkey or Bulgaria for the diagnostic/planning phase, then continue maintenance chemotherapy back home. Your Balkan oncologist provides a detailed protocol report for your UK oncologist.
What is an MDT (multidisciplinary team) meeting?▾
An MDT is a weekly meeting where oncologist, surgeon, radiologist, pathologist and sometimes geneticist review every cancer case collectively. This is the standard of care in UK NHS cancer centres and is replicated at JCI-accredited Balkan hospitals.
Is immunotherapy available in Turkey?▾
Yes — checkpoint inhibitors (pembrolizumab/Keytruda, nivolumab/Opdivo, atezolizumab/Tecentriq) are available in Turkish JCI hospitals. Some hospitals participate in clinical trials offering access to novel agents not yet approved in Europe.
How do I send my pathology slides for a second opinion?▾
Physical slides can be shipped via courier, or many labs now provide digital scanning (WSI) that can be reviewed remotely. BalcanCare coordinates this process — we arrange slide retrieval from your UK pathology lab and secure transfer to the Balkan institution.
What genetic testing is available?▾
NGS (next-generation sequencing) tumour panels covering 300–500 genes are available in Istanbul and Sofia. Results take 10–15 working days and identify actionable mutations (BRCA, KRAS, EGFR, ALK, etc.) that may qualify you for targeted therapies.
