Frequently Asked Questions
Eye Care & LASIK Abroad — FAQs
Is LASIK in Bulgaria or Turkey safe?▾
Yes, when performed at an accredited clinic with modern equipment. BalcanCare partner clinics use Zeiss VISUMAX or Schwind AMARIS lasers and perform thorough Pentacam corneal mapping before any procedure. Complication rates are below 1% for suitable candidates.
Am I a candidate for LASIK?▾
LASIK is suitable for most people aged 21+ with stable prescription for 12 months, adequate corneal thickness, and no keratoconus. Your clinic will perform a full corneal topography (Pentacam) assessment on arrival — many clinics offer this free as part of the consultation.
How long do I need to stay for LASIK?▾
LASIK is a day procedure. Most patients fly home the next day after a post-op check. We recommend 2 nights in-country: day 1 surgery, day 2 morning post-op review, fly day 2 afternoon.
What's the difference between LASIK and SMILE?▾
LASIK uses a hinged corneal flap then laser reshaping. SMILE is flapless — a small lenticule is extracted through a 3mm incision — making it safer for thin corneas and contact sports. SMILE is slightly more expensive but has less dry-eye risk.
What if I need further treatment after returning home?▾
Laser re-treatments (enhancements) are very rare — below 3% within 5 years. If needed, any licensed ophthalmologist worldwide can perform an enhancement using the prescription data provided by your Balkan surgeon.
Does the premium multifocal IOL really eliminate reading glasses?▾
For 90–95% of patients, yes. Premium IOLs (Alcon PanOptix, Zeiss AT LARA, J&J Synergy) provide full range vision. A small percentage may experience mild halos at night, which typically diminish after 3–6 months of neuroadaptation.
